Kodi Suni Faces Fresh Case for Threatening Prison Officer in Kerala

Police in Kerala have registered a new case against Sunil Kumar, widely known as Kodi Suni. This 43-year-old convict is serving time for the murder of T P Chandrasekharan. Authorities charged him with threatening a senior prison officer.

Threats Made Against Joint Superintendent and Family

According to the First Information Report, Suni threatened to kill the prison's joint superintendent. He also targeted the officer's family members. The complaint states that Suni issued these threats during a dispute over prison rules.

The incident began on December 11. The joint superintendent asked Suni to remove a thread tied around his hand. Prison regulations prohibit such items. Suni allegedly refused to comply with the order.

When the officer insisted, Suni broke the thread and threw it on the ground. However, the very next day, prison staff found Suni with another thread tied around his hand. He again refused to remove it.

False Complaint Warning and Delayed Reporting

During this confrontation, Suni not only threatened the officer's life but also warned that false complaints would be filed against him. This intimidation attempt added severity to the incident.

Although the threats occurred approximately one month ago, the prison official waited before taking action. He finally lodged a formal complaint with Kuttipuram police on Wednesday night. This delay in reporting has raised questions about prison security protocols.

Legal Charges and Previous Transfers

Police booked Suni under multiple legal provisions. These include BNS Sections 296(a) and 351(2). Authorities also invoked Section 81 of the Kerala Prisons and Correctional Services (Management) Act, 2010.

Suni currently resides at the Central Prison and Correctional Home in Tavanur, Malappuram district. Prison authorities transferred him here from Kannur Central Jail in August 2025. This move followed reports of misconduct and mobile phone usage.

The transfer decision came after footage surfaced showing Suni and two fellow convicts consuming liquor. This incident occurred in front of a hotel at Thalassery. They were returning to Kannur Jail after appearing in court when this violation happened.

This new case adds to Suni's legal troubles while he serves his murder sentence. Prison officials emphasize that such threats against staff undermine institutional discipline and safety.
