Kochi Police Make Dual Arrests in Bus Assault and Major Drug Seizure Cases
In a significant law enforcement operation, Kochi police have made arrests in two separate criminal cases, highlighting ongoing efforts to combat violence and narcotics smuggling in the region.
Bus Driver and Conductor Assault Leads to Arrest of Two Accused
The Ernakulam rural police have apprehended two individuals for allegedly assaulting and injuring a KSRTC bus driver and conductor in a disturbing incident that occurred last Friday. The arrested persons have been identified as Ameer Shah, aged 21, from Keezhmad, and Muhammad Rizwan, aged 24, from Thottumukham.
According to police reports, the accused allegedly stopped their motorcycle in front of a bus near Chalakka and forcibly opened the driver's door to launch an attack. The conductor, who bravely attempted to intervene during the altercation, also sustained injuries in the violent episode.
Following the assault, the accused reportedly took the bus keys and went into hiding by turning off their mobile phones. A special investigation team, acting on intelligence, successfully tracked down and nabbed the suspects from their relatives' houses. Police stated that the accused had evaded capture with assistance from friends.
The motorcycle used in the incident has been seized by authorities as evidence. Investigators have revealed that the duo already faces another case for allegedly assaulting a migrant worker at a pump in the Muttom area, indicating a pattern of violent behavior.
The investigation team included Inspector K G Gopakumar, Sub-Inspectors Jossy M Johnson and B Suresh Kumar, along with Civil Police Officers Mahinsha Abubakar, Muhammad Ameer, and M Shahin, who coordinated efforts to ensure the arrests were made efficiently.
City Police Seize 8.19kg of Ganja, Arrest Four in Narcotics Crackdown
In a parallel development, Kochi city police conducted a major crackdown on narcotics smuggling, resulting in the arrest of four individuals and the seizure of 8.19 kilograms of ganja. This operation was part of a broader initiative targeting drug mafias, under the directive of City Commissioner Kaliraj Mahesh Kumar.
The arrested individuals have been named as Jaganath Nayak, 26, and Jithin Nayak, 23, both hailing from Ganjam, Odisha; Appu Omanakkuttan alias Anilkuttan, 26, of Vellathooval, Idukki; and Anu A A, 35, of Kanjikuzhi, Idukki.
Acting on a specific tip-off regarding ganja being transported from Odisha to Edappally, police surveillance teams spotted Jaganath and Jithin arriving at Edappally railway station via the Antyodaya Express. Officers discreetly followed the suspects as they entered a car on the road behind the railway station, leading to their apprehension and the confiscation of the illicit substance.
The accused have been formally charged under relevant provisions of the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act. They were presented before a court and have been remanded to judicial custody, pending further legal proceedings.
These dual police actions underscore a concerted effort by Kochi law enforcement to address both violent crimes and drug-related offenses, aiming to enhance public safety and uphold legal standards in the community.
