Kochi Family Tragedy: Five Found Dead in Suspected Murder-Suicide Case
In a deeply distressing incident that has shaken the Vaduthala area of Kochi, five members of a single family, including three young children, were discovered deceased inside a rented two-storey house on Saturday morning. The grim discovery has prompted a comprehensive police investigation, with authorities strongly suspecting a case of murder-suicide.
Chilling Details of the Discovery
Police officials reported that the bodies were found under haunting circumstances. Sreekumari, aged 58, was found wearing a formal saree. The two younger children, aged 4 and 2, were discovered on a bed, covered with blankets and dressed neatly, complete with sunglasses. The eldest child, a 14-year-old, was found in a separate room, placed on a sheet laid out on the floor and dressed in a suit. The air-conditioner in the house was found running at the time of discovery.
The deceased have been identified as Aswathi Nair, 36, her mother Sreekumari, 58, and Aswathi's three children aged 14, 4, and 2. While the two adult women were found hanging, the children were found dead inside the house. Preliminary findings suggest possible poisoning as a cause of death for the children, though the exact cause will be confirmed following a thorough post-mortem examination.
Suicide Note Points to Prolonged Distress
A suicide note recovered from the house has provided crucial insight into the tragic events. The note indicates that Aswathi Nair faced prolonged distress and emotional turmoil following the death of her husband. According to police investigations, Aswathi's husband had died by suicide in August of last year due to health issues linked to alcoholism and marital discord.
The suicide note reveals that after her husband's death, Aswathi faced significant blame and pressure from her husband's family. This ongoing emotional burden appears to have contributed to the tragic outcome. Investigators believe Aswathi may have been contemplating suicide for some time, with evidence suggesting careful planning of the incident.
Financial and Medical Background
Police investigations have uncovered additional concerning details. Approximately one month after her husband's death, Aswathi had prepared a will stating that her assets should be transferred to an entity named "Providence Home." Authorities are currently working to identify this organization and understand its connection to the family.
The family, originally natives of Vilappilsala in Thiruvananthapuram, had relocated to Kochi just two months prior to the incident. Their move was specifically for the medical treatment of the eldest child. Medicines were recovered from the house during the investigation, and officials are now collecting the child's complete medical history as part of their ongoing inquiry.
Discovery and Immediate Response
The tragic discovery was made after growing concern among acquaintances. The family had stopped responding to phone calls, prompting a relative of the house owner to enter the premises using a spare key. It was this individual who discovered the bodies and immediately alerted authorities.
The house had been rented on a temporary basis, and the family was expected to vacate the property recently. Police have confirmed that the family was last seen alive around March 17, several days before the discovery.
Ongoing Investigation and Family Notification
The bodies have been shifted to Ernakulam General Hospital and Kalamassery Medical College for detailed post-mortem examinations. These medical procedures are expected to provide definitive answers regarding the exact cause and timing of death for all five victims.
Police have confirmed that further investigation is actively underway, with multiple angles being explored. Authorities have also notified relatives of the family about the tragic incident. The investigation continues to examine all aspects of the case, including the family's financial situation, medical history, and the emotional distress documented in the suicide note.
This heartbreaking incident has left the local community in shock and raised important questions about mental health support systems and family crisis intervention in contemporary society.
