Khandagiri police arrest duo for extorting couples

Police in Bhubaneswar have apprehended two individuals for allegedly posing as law enforcement officers and blackmailing young couples. The arrests were made on Wednesday by the Khandagiri police, putting an end to a disturbing extortion racket operating near a historical site.

Duo Targeted Couples at Popular Tourist Spot

The accused have been identified as Joseph M E, a 41-year-old from Pathanamthitta district in Kerala, and his associate, 50-year-old Jitendra Samantaray, a resident of Bhubaneswar. According to police reports, the pair specifically targeted young couples visiting the famous Khandagiri and Udayagiri caves, a popular location for tourists and locals alike.

Their modus operandi involved secretly photographing and filming the couples. They would then approach the unsuspecting individuals, threatening to share the compromising images and videos on social media platforms. To avoid public humiliation and scandal, the couples were coerced into paying money to the accused.

Impersonation and Blackmail Tactics Revealed

Investigations revealed that the duo went beyond simple threats. They allegedly impersonated police personnel to add credibility to their intimidation and to prevent their victims from resisting or reporting the incident immediately. This guise of authority made it significantly harder for the targeted couples to question their demands or seek help.

The Khandagiri police, acting on information and complaints, successfully tracked down and arrested both men. The arrest highlights the proactive measures taken by local authorities to ensure the safety and security of citizens and tourists in public spaces.

Crackdown on Crimes Targeting Public Morality

This incident sheds light on a form of crime that exploits social stigma and the fear of public exposure. The police have urged the public, especially young people, to remain vigilant and report any such suspicious activities or individuals posing as officials immediately.

The swift action by the Khandagiri police serves as a warning to others who might engage in similar illegal activities. It reinforces the commitment of the Odisha police to crack down on crimes that threaten personal privacy and attempt to extort money through fear and deception.

Both accused are currently in police custody, and further investigation is underway to determine if they were involved in other similar incidents in the area. The police are also examining the seized devices to identify any other potential victims.
