Kerala Police Intensify Probe into Controversial Vishu Advertisement Case
In a significant development in the ongoing investigation into a controversial Vishu advertisement, the Cherthala police in Kottayam district have seized three mobile phones. These devices were allegedly used to post inflammatory comments and posters on social media platforms in connection with the contentious advertisement posted by a restaurant owner.
Background of the Case
Police had earlier registered a suo motu case after Shamnas, aged 30 and one of the partners at Mehr Mandi & Grills restaurant in Cherthala, posted an advertisement on Vishu day. The advertisement depicted Lord Krishna having manthi, a traditional meat-based dish, which sparked widespread outrage for allegedly hurting religious sentiments. The case was formally registered under relevant legal provisions addressing offenses against religious feelings.
Investigation and Seizure Details
The seizure of the three mobile phones is a crucial part of the police investigation into this incident. Authorities are examining the devices to gather evidence related to the social media activity that followed the advertisement's posting. District Police Chief M P Mohanachandran stated that decisive action will be taken against individuals spreading hate posts online, emphasizing a zero-tolerance policy towards content that incites religious discord.
Additional Legal Actions
In addition to the phone seizures, police have registered separate cases against two groups: those who spread posts inciting religious hatred in the wake of the advertisement, and those who organized and participated in an unauthorized march to the Mehr Mandi & Grills restaurant in Cherthala. These actions underscore the police's commitment to maintaining public order and preventing communal tensions.
Establishment of Monitoring Cell
To effectively track and address the fallout from this incident, a special monitoring cell has been established in the district. This cell is tasked with identifying individuals who share hate messages or engage in activities that could exacerbate religious tensions. The initiative aims to curb the spread of misinformation and inflammatory content on digital platforms, ensuring a swift response to any violations.
The case highlights the growing challenges law enforcement faces in regulating social media content that touches on sensitive religious issues, particularly during festive seasons like Vishu. Authorities continue to urge the public to exercise restraint and report any provocative content to help maintain communal harmony.
