Kerala High Court Orders Leadership Change in Suraj Lama Death Investigation
The Kerala High Court has taken a significant step in the investigation into the tragic death of Suraj Lama by ordering a change in the leadership of the Special Investigation Team (SIT). Suraj Lama, a native of Bengaluru, had been working in Kuwait for several years. His ordeal began when he was hospitalized in Kuwait after suffering from acute toxic leukoencephalopathy, a condition caused by alcohol poisoning. Subsequently, he was deported to India on October 5, 2025, without his family in Bengaluru being notified of his arrival.
After landing in Kochi, Lama was reportedly seen at multiple locations before being reported missing. On October 10, the Thrikkakara police took him into custody without properly identifying him and admitted him to the Government Medical College Hospital in Kalamassery. Following this, his whereabouts became unknown, leading to a missing person case.
Discovery of the Body and Allegations of Lapses
The case took a grim turn when a decomposed body was discovered near the hospital on November 30. Forensic tests later confirmed that the remains were those of Suraj Lama. This revelation prompted serious concerns and allegations of lapses on the part of various officials, including those in the immigration department.
In response to these allegations, the Kerala High Court had earlier constituted the SIT with the primary objective of tracing Lama after he went missing upon reaching Kochi.
