In a significant crackdown on narcotics, Kerala police arrested seven individuals, including a qualified doctor and a dental student, during an early morning raid in Thoppil, Kaniyapuram on Thursday. The operation was executed by specialized anti-narcotics teams based on credible intelligence.
DANSAF Strikes After Tip-Off
The Attingal and Nedumangad Rural District Anti-Narcotic Special Action Force (DANSAF) carried out the arrests. The action was initiated following a specific tip-off received by the Thiruvananthapuram Rural Superintendent of Police. The raiding party, led by the Narcotics Deputy Superintendent of Police, surrounded the hideout and took all suspects into custody without facing any resistance.
Profile of the Accused and Modus Operandi
The arrested group comprised two women and an IT professional alongside the medical practitioner and the BDS student. According to preliminary investigations, the gang was allegedly involved in smuggling synthetic drugs like MDMA from Bengaluru. Their primary clientele reportedly consisted of medical professionals and students in the region.
This raid followed a previous encounter where the suspects had managed to evade capture after a high-speed chase, even ramming their vehicle into a police jeep. The latest intelligence allowed police to pinpoint their location successfully.
Substantial Haul of Drugs and Assets Seized
During the search of the premises, authorities confiscated a considerable cache of narcotics and other items. The seizure included:
- Four grams of MDMA
- 100 grams of cannabis
- One gram of hybrid ganja
- Two cars and two motorcycles
- Ten mobile phones
Police estimated the street value of the seized drugs to be approximately Rs 3,000 per gram. The vehicles and phones are believed to have been used for facilitating the drug trade.
Legal Proceedings Begin
All seven individuals have been formally taken into custody by the Kadinamkulam Police for further investigation. They will face legal proceedings under relevant sections of the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act. This operation highlights the ongoing efforts by Kerala police to curb the supply of synthetic drugs targeting educated youth and professionals.
