The Kerala Home Department has taken decisive action against a senior police officer following disturbing allegations of sexual misconduct and corruption. Deputy Superintendent of Police Umesh A, who was serving in Vatakara under Kozhikode rural police, has been suspended from duty with immediate effect.
Serious Allegations Surface
The suspension comes days after shocking claims emerged that the officer sexually assaulted a woman who had been taken into police custody in connection with prostitution activities. The internal investigation revealed that Umesh had misused his official position during his tenure as police inspector at Vadakkenchery station in Palakkad district.
According to the findings, the deputy SP not only sexually exploited the woman but also accepted bribes from individuals linked to illegal activities. The case came to light in a tragic manner following the suicide of Cherpulassery Station House Officer Binu Thomas, who was found dead on November 15.
Official Action and Government Response
The state police chief recommended immediate suspension after a thorough inquiry, which the Home Department promptly implemented. A special report submitted to the government described Umesh's activities as "indisciplined, immoral, and illegal" and stated that they had severely tarnished the image of the entire Kerala police force.
In its official order released on Sunday, the government stated that after detailed review, they found prima facie evidence of grave misconduct, indiscipline, abuse of power, and immoral actions by the deputy SP. The order clearly stated: "In the circumstances, Umesh A, deputy SP, is suspended from service with immediate effect pending disciplinary action."
Further Investigation Ordered
The government has directed the state police chief to submit a panel of competent officers who could be appointed as inquiry officers to conduct an oral inquiry into the matter. This indicates that further disciplinary proceedings are underway and more serious consequences might follow for the accused officer.
The victim's identity has been protected in accordance with Supreme Court directives concerning sexual assault cases, ensuring her privacy and dignity are maintained throughout the legal process.
This incident has raised serious questions about police accountability and the mechanisms in place to prevent such abuses of power within the law enforcement system in Kerala.
