Three Forest Officials Suspended in Karnataka Teakwood Theft Investigation

In a significant development concerning forest conservation in Karnataka, three forest department officials, including a deputy range forest officer (DRFO), have been suspended following an investigation into a major teakwood theft case reported in the Kajur Reserve Forest of Somwarpet.

Officials Facing Suspension

The suspended officials have been identified as DRFO Ullas P, forest guard Antony, and staff member Chandresh. Divisional forest officer (DCF) Abishek confirmed the suspensions and stated that further disciplinary action would be taken upon completion of the ongoing investigation into the illegal activities.

Background of the Teakwood Theft Case

The case dates back to December 13, when forest officials from the Somwarpet division, acting on a credible tip-off, apprehended individuals involved in illegal teakwood felling and smuggling operations within the protected Kajur Reserve Forest area. While one suspect was arrested during the initial operation, five others managed to escape from the scene.

As the investigation progressed, officials began suspecting a much wider network of involvement, including potential collusion from within the forest department itself. Investigators identified possible involvement of personnel including a DRFO, a forest guard, and members of specialized units such as the Rapid Response Team and Elephant Task Force.

Scale of Illegal Activity and SIT Formation

Investigators later discovered that more than 25 mature teakwood trees had been illegally felled and systematically smuggled out of the reserve forest, strongly indicating insider knowledge and potential facilitation by forest department personnel. The scale of the operation prompted immediate action from higher authorities.

In response to these findings, Karnataka State Forest Minister Eshwar Kandre directed the chief conservator of forests in Kodagu district to constitute a Special Investigation Team (SIT) to thoroughly investigate the matter and identify all individuals involved in the illegal teakwood operation.

SIT Investigation Findings

The SIT, led by forest vigilance DRFO Ganashree, conducted a comprehensive investigation that uncovered further details about the smuggling network. Their probe led to the booking of approximately 10 local residents who were allegedly linked to the teakwood theft case. These individuals were later released on bail as the investigation continues.

Authorities also made significant seizures during the course of the investigation, recovering 59 teakwood logs that were part of the illegal harvesting operation. The investigation remains ongoing as officials work to dismantle the entire network responsible for the theft of valuable forest resources from protected areas.
