Kanpur Police Cracks Down on Fake Gold Necklace Scam, Arrests Five
In a significant crackdown on organized fraud, the Kanpur police have successfully busted a gang involved in a sophisticated trickery and fraud scheme, leading to the arrest of five miscreants. The operation, conducted under the direct supervision of Superintendent of Police Abhishek Bharti, resulted in the seizure of fake gold necklaces, cash amounting to Rs 24,500, and various tools used in the fraudulent activities from the possession of the accused.
Details of the Arrest and Investigation
Additional Superintendent of Police Alok Mishra provided details on the arrested individuals, who have been identified as Bheem Bhat, Gulshan Sharma, Poonam, Devli Sharma, and Rajwati. The case originated from a complaint filed by Jitendra Kumar, a resident of Hisawa village under the Mangalpur police station area in Kanpur Dehat. On January 12, Kumar reported to the Dibiyapur police station that he had been sold a fake gold necklace on January 5 by unknown persons.
Upon receiving the complaint, the police immediately registered a formal case and launched a thorough investigation. During subsequent interrogations, the accused revealed their modus operandi: they specifically targeted villagers and women at fairs, grain markets, and crowded bazaars. To execute their scam, they posed as owners of an old treasure, selling counterfeit necklaces while showing a small piece of real gold to build trust and credibility with their victims.
Police Operation and Seizure
Acting on a crucial tip-off, a joint team from the Dibiyapur police and the SOG/Surveillance unit carried out a coordinated operation on Saturday. The arrests were made near the Brahmadev Temple located on Ajmatpur Road. The police team, led by Inspector in-charge Rudra Narayan Tripathi and including sub-inspectors Samit Chaudhary, Kuldeep Kumar, and Arvind Kumar Gupta, along with other personnel, played a key role in apprehending all the accused.
Items seized during the operation include:
- Fake gold necklaces used in the fraud
- Cash worth Rs 24,500
- Various tools and equipment employed in the scam
Legal proceedings are currently underway against the arrested individuals, with authorities emphasizing their commitment to curbing such fraudulent activities in the region.
