The incident unfolded with two of the accused sustaining gunshot injuries and being rushed to Lala Lajpat Rai Hospital for urgent medical treatment.
Details of the Robbery Incident
The robbery occurred on the evening of March 2, when criminals traveling in an auto-rickshaw brutally assaulted and robbed a resident of Jahanabad Khajuriya in Fatehpur. The victim had come to the city with the intention of purchasing a Bullet motorcycle, carrying the substantial sum of Rs 2.70 lakh. After the attack, the accused swiftly fled the scene, prompting an immediate and intensive police investigation.
Police Investigation and Encounter
Police officers meticulously examined CCTV footage from the area, which proved crucial in identifying the auto-rickshaw's registration number. This breakthrough led to the identification of the suspects involved in the heinous crime.
On Saturday night, authorities received a tip-off indicating that three of the accused were hiding in the Khewra Katri locality. Acting swiftly, police cordoned off the area to apprehend them. However, the situation escalated when the accused opened fire on the police team. In a retaliatory response, police returned fire, resulting in two of the accused being shot in their legs.
Arrests and Ongoing Search
DCP (Central) Atul Kumar Srivastav confirmed the arrests, naming the individuals as Jitendra alias Chhotu, Jitendra alias Jeetu, and Sumit, all hailing from Nawabganj. He noted that Jitendra and Chhotu were the ones injured in the legs during the exchange of fire.
The DCP emphasized that police have launched a comprehensive search operation to track down other members believed to be part of the criminal gang. This proactive measure aims to dismantle the network and prevent future incidents of a similar nature.
This encounter highlights the Kanpur police's relentless efforts to combat street crime and ensure public safety in the region. The swift action from the initial robbery to the arrests underscores the effectiveness of modern investigative techniques, including CCTV analysis, in solving cases.
