In a dramatic turn of events in the murder case of a young kabaddi player, Punjab Police shot dead a prime suspect in an encounter near Mohali on Wednesday. Simultaneously, a second key accused was apprehended at the Indira Gandhi International Airport in Delhi as he attempted to flee the country.
Encounter in Lalru Leads to Accused's Death
The police operation unfolded in the Lalru area near Mohali. According to officials, a police team acted on specific intelligence and raided a location to apprehend Harpinder, alias Middu, a resident of Naushehra Pannuan in Tarn Taran district. The accused, identified as a key figure in the murder, allegedly opened fire on the approaching police party.
The exchange of gunfire resulted in serious injuries to two head constables, Gulab Singh and Kumar Sharma. The police team retaliated in what they described as self-defence. Harpinder sustained injuries during this encounter and was rushed to the Civil Hospital in Dera Bassi, where he was later declared dead.
Mastermind Arrested at Delhi Airport
In a parallel development, the alleged mastermind behind the killing was captured at the Delhi airport. The accused, identified as Aishdeep Singh, also from Tarn Taran, was attempting to board a flight to Muscat, Oman, to evade arrest. Police stated that Aishdeep had been staying in Russia and had entered India on November 25 specifically to execute the murder plot on the directions of another individual known as Dony Bal.
Investigations reveal that it was Aishdeep who provided information leading the police to his accomplice, Harpinder. This tip-off directly triggered the raid that culminated in the encounter.
Victim and Criminal Background
The murder that sparked this intense manhunt was that of 30-year-old kabaddi player and promoter Kanwar Digvijay Singh. His killing had sent shockwaves through the local sports community. The Punjab Police, in an official post on social media platform X, stated that the deceased accused, Harpinder, was involved in multiple heinous crimes and had a serious criminal background.
Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Mohali, Harmandeep Singh Gill, oversaw the operations. The raid in Lalru was conducted by teams led by DSP Dera Bassi Bikramjit Singh Brar and Inspectors Sumit Mor, Pushvinder Singh, and Malkiat Singh.
The case remains under active investigation as authorities work to uncover the full conspiracy behind the kabaddi player's murder and the network involved.
