Overbridge Collapse Halts NH-45 Traffic in Jabalpur, Raises Construction Quality Concerns
Jabalpur Overbridge Collapse Stops NH-45 Traffic, Sparks Outrage

Overbridge Collapse Brings NH-45 Traffic to a Standstill in Jabalpur

Traffic on National Highway 45 came to a complete halt near Shahpura in Jabalpur on Sunday after a critical portion of an under-construction overbridge above the railway line collapsed around 4 pm. The incident triggered massive traffic jams and raised serious questions about construction quality, as this marks another section of the same bridge caving in within a short period.

No Casualties Reported, But Traffic Chaos Ensues

Fortunately, no casualties were reported from the collapse. However, with the Shahpura–Bhopal road completely blocked, authorities were forced to divert traffic through Patan and alternative rural routes. This led to extensive traffic snarls across the entire region, causing significant inconvenience to commuters and transporters alike.

The toll plaza management took immediate action by allowing vehicles to pass without charging toll fees to help ease the congestion. This emergency measure was implemented to prevent further backup and facilitate smoother flow on diverted routes.

Locals Allege Corruption and Poor Construction Quality

Local residents have voiced strong allegations of corruption and substandard workmanship. They pointed out that one side of the overbridge had already sunk during the monsoon nearly three months ago, forcing authorities to impose a one-way traffic system as a temporary solution.

"This clearly shows the project lacked the required strength," alleged resident Jitendra Singh. He explained that the bridge section that gave way had soil filling underneath and could not withstand the increased load caused by the one-way traffic diversion.

Videos capturing the dramatic collapse and expressions of public anger quickly surfaced on social media platforms, amplifying concerns about infrastructure safety and accountability.

Official Responses and Investigation Underway

Shahpura Station House Officer Praveen Dhurve confirmed that traffic on the crucial Jabalpur–Bhopal road was diverted as bridge construction work was underway. Heavy vehicles were specifically rerouted to prevent further strain on alternative pathways.

Sub-Divisional Magistrate Madan Singh Raghuvanshi stated that preliminary assessments suggest the bridge collapsed due to technical reasons. Engineers are currently examining the site to determine the exact cause and assess the structural integrity of remaining sections.

This incident has highlighted ongoing concerns about infrastructure development standards in the region, with calls for thorough investigation and improved oversight mechanisms.
