Indore Residential Fire Claims Eight Lives, Six Hail from Kishanganj District
A catastrophic fire erupted at a three-storey residential building in Indore's Brijeshwari Annex near Bengali Square early Wednesday morning, resulting in eight fatalities and three injuries. Among the deceased, six individuals were residents of Kishanganj district, highlighting the tragic cross-regional impact of the incident.
Victims Identified as Family Members Seeking Medical Treatment
The primary victims included Vijay Sethia (65), a cosmetic businessman from Kishanganj, who had traveled to Indore with his family for cancer treatment at his brother-in-law's residence. He perished alongside his wife Suman Sethia (60), nephew Chotu Sethia (22), daughter Tinu (35), and two grandchildren—a 12-year-old granddaughter and a 7-year-old grandson.
Manish Daftari, a Kishanganj-based businessman and family friend, expressed profound grief, stating, "The entire community is in deep shock following this unimaginable tragedy. It is heartbreaking to contemplate the loss of an entire family unit in such horrific circumstances."
Electronic Lock System Hindered Escape, Investigation Reveals Cause
Preliminary investigations indicate the fire originated from a short circuit in an electric vehicle that was charging overnight. The presence of multiple gas cylinders within the house exacerbated the situation, leading to explosions that rapidly engulfed the structure.
Daftari elaborated on the escape challenges, noting, "Survivors on the top floor managed to jump to a neighboring terrace, but others were trapped inside. The electronic lock system on the main door failed to open during the emergency, preventing their exit."
Additional Victims and Community Response
The remaining two deceased were identified as Manoj Pugalia, Vijay Sethia's brother-in-law and owner of the house, and his daughter-in-law Simran, who was reportedly four months pregnant. This adds a layer of profound loss to the already devastating event.
Given the severe condition of the remains, community members have decided to conduct last rites promptly. Daftari explained, "The bodies were not in a state to be preserved, with only skeletal remains recovered, necessitating immediate funeral arrangements."
Family members from Kishanganj have swiftly traveled to Indore to manage the aftermath, as the local community grapples with the emotional and logistical repercussions of this tragedy. The incident underscores critical safety concerns regarding electronic locking mechanisms and proper storage of flammable materials in residential settings.
