Illegal Debris Dumping in Shimla Forests Continues Unchecked Despite Flying Squad
Illegal Debris Dumping in Shimla Forests Unchecked

The rampant illegal dumping of debris in forest areas of Shimla continues to pose a major threat to the forests and the overall environment of the state capital. Over the years, residents have developed a habit of illegally dumping construction debris in forest areas, often under the cover of darkness. This practice not only endangers the environment but also increases the risk of disasters during heavy rains.

Flying Squad Yet to Take Action

To curb this menace, the Shimla Municipal Corporation (MC) constituted a flying squad earlier this year. The squad was tasked with conducting day-and-night surprise inspections across the town to detect illegal dumping activities. Upon detection, the squad was directed to inform the Forest Department, record the offender's details and vehicle registration number, issue challans, and impound vehicles. However, despite its formation, the squad has not taken any concrete action so far.

Councillor Highlights Inaction

Virender Thakur, Councillor of the Summer Hill ward and a member of the flying squad, stated that no significant steps have been taken by the corporation, leaving the problem unresolved. “We are ready to take action against illegal dumping, but the corporation has yet to assign us duties, keeping the flying squad inactive. As a result, illegal dumping in forest areas continues unchecked, with people freely dumping debris at night,” he said.

The lack of enforcement has emboldened offenders, who continue to exploit the situation. Environmentalists and local residents have expressed concern over the growing threat to Shimla's fragile ecosystem. They urge the authorities to activate the flying squad immediately and impose strict penalties on violators to protect the city's forests and prevent potential disasters.
