Mumbai Court Frames Charges Against IIT-B Student in Suicide Case

A Mumbai sessions court has formally framed charges against IIT-Bombay student Arman Khatri in connection with the tragic death of his college mate, Darshan Solanki, in 2023. The court proceedings mark a significant development in a case that has drawn national attention to campus life and student welfare.

Charges Include Abetment to Suicide and SC/ST Act Provisions

On Wednesday, Additional Sessions Judge G G Bhansali framed multiple charges against Khatri. The primary charges include abetment to suicide and criminal intimidation under the Indian Penal Code (IPC). Additionally, the court invoked provisions of the Scheduled Castes and the Scheduled Tribes (Prevention of Atrocities) Act, adding a critical dimension to the legal proceedings given the social context of the case.

Following the framing of charges, Arman Khatri entered a plea of "not guilty," setting the stage for a full trial. The court has now scheduled the case for compliance procedures on April 27, 2026, under Section 294 of the Criminal Procedure Code. This section allows for the acceptance of undisputed documents as evidence without formal proof, potentially streamlining the trial process.

Background of the Tragic Incident

Darshan Solanki, a first-year B.Tech (Chemical) student at IIT-Bombay, allegedly died by suicide on February 12, 2023. The incident occurred just one day after his semester examinations concluded, sending shockwaves through the academic community. Solanki was found to have jumped from a hostel floor, prompting immediate investigations by authorities.

Three weeks after the tragedy, a Special Investigation Team (SIT) of the Mumbai Police made a crucial discovery. Investigators recovered a one-line note from Solanki's room that allegedly implicated Arman Khatri in his death. This evidence became a cornerstone of the prosecution's case, leading to Khatri's arrest on April 9, 2023.

Legal Proceedings and Evidence

The police chargesheet, filed earlier, detailed the charges of abetment to suicide and criminal intimidation under the IPC, along with the invocation of the Atrocities Act. During the recent court hearing, the defense advocate consented to the framing of charges, after which the court explained the legal implications to the accused.

The prosecution has built its case on several pieces of evidence, including alleged messages sent by Solanki to Khatri the day before his death. These communications are expected to play a pivotal role in establishing the narrative of harassment or intimidation that may have contributed to the tragic outcome.

As the trial date approaches in 2026, the case continues to highlight broader issues of mental health, campus safety, and social dynamics within prestigious educational institutions like IIT-Bombay. The legal process will now focus on examining the evidence and determining accountability in this deeply sorrowful incident.
