Idukki Trader Sentenced to Three Years for Sexual Assault of Schoolboys

A 72-year-old trader from Idukki district has been handed a three-year rigorous imprisonment sentence along with a fine of Rs 20,000 for sexually assaulting minor schoolboys. The conviction was delivered by the Idukki fast track Pocso court, presided over by Judge Nobel D S.

Details of the Case and Conviction

The convict, identified as Chacko Mathai, a resident of Kanjirathanam in Thangamani, Idukki, was found guilty of sexually abusing schoolboys who visited his shop. According to the prosecution, the incidents occurred in 2025. Mathai operated a shop near the old police station premises, which was in close proximity to Thangamani school.

The prosecution stated that the accused exploited his position by sexually assaulting minor boys who came to his shop to purchase goods. The matter was brought to light after the children reported the abuse to their school authorities. Following this disclosure, the Thangamani police promptly registered a case and initiated a thorough investigation into the allegations.

Legal Proceedings and Court Ruling

In the case that was registered and chargesheeted in 2025, special public prosecutor Shijomone Joseph Kandathinkarayil represented the prosecution. The court, after examining the evidence and testimonies, found Chacko Mathai guilty under the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (Pocso) Act.

The sentencing includes:

  • Three years of rigorous imprisonment for the sexual assault charges.
  • A fine of Rs 20,000, which must be paid as part of the penalty.
