Hyderabad Family Tragedy: Debt-Ridden Contractor Kills Disabled Daughter, Attempts Suicide

In a heart-wrenching incident that has shocked Hyderabad, a private civil contractor, driven to despair by mounting debts and business losses, allegedly killed his mentally challenged, bed-ridden daughter before attempting suicide along with his wife and son. The tragic event unfolded at their flat in Vijay Nagar Colony, Kukatpally, on Tuesday, revealing a desperate family pushed to the brink by financial ruin.

A Desperate Plan Unfolds

According to police reports, Marpuri Satish Kumar, aged 54, his wife Amani, 42, and their son Mithil, 23, had meticulously planned their demise. On Monday night, the trio consumed insecticide in a bid to end their lives. However, when the poison failed to take effect, Satish allegedly took a more drastic step. At 1:30 AM on Tuesday, he smothered his 18-year-old daughter, Srijavalli, with a pillow as she lay in her bed.

"The insecticide they had consumed did not kill them, so the trio took a mix of some medicines - Crocin, Dolo-650 along with Atarax anti-fungal dusting powder," explained G Venkata Bhaskar Reddy, Satish's childhood friend. "Even after consuming the medicines, they did not die and at 5 PM the same day, they cut their wrists with a kitchen knife."

Friend's Intervention Uncovers Horror

The grim situation came to light when Satish called Bhaskar Reddy at 3:30 PM on Wednesday, requesting him to come to his house to discuss an urgent matter. Bhaskar, who reached Satish's flat at 4:30 PM, was met with a horrifying scene. He found the trio severely unwell, with bleeding wrists, and Srijavalli's lifeless body on the bed.

Bhaskar immediately alerted the neighbours and police. Jagadgirigutta police responded swiftly, booking a murder case and sending Srijavalli's body for postmortem. The injured family members were shifted to a hospital for treatment, where they are currently reported to be out of danger.

Financial Despair as Motive

Investigations by the police have pointed to overwhelming financial distress as the primary motive behind this tragic incident. Satish, a native of Madanapalle in Chittoor district of Andhra Pradesh, was involved in civil contracts and real estate business.

Jagadgirigutta inspector B Venkatesham stated, "Satish was into civil contracts and real estate business. He had incurred losses in the business and ended up in debts. We are yet to ascertain his debt burden."

Satish and his wife confessed to the police that due to the mounting debts, they, along with their son Mithil, had decided to end their lives. The inspector further revealed, "Srijavalli was mentally challenged since childhood. The family members decided to kill her and then end their lives."

Legal Proceedings and Aftermath

On the basis of Bhaskar Reddy's complaint, Jagadgirigutta police have registered a case under Section 103(1) (murder) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita against Satish. Inspector Venkatesham confirmed, "All the injured are out of danger. Once Satish is declared fit, he will be arrested."

This tragic incident underscores the severe mental health and financial crises that can drive individuals to extreme actions. It highlights the urgent need for support systems for families grappling with debt and caring for disabled members, particularly in urban settings like Hyderabad where economic pressures are often intense.
