Public outrage is growing in Howrah's Ramrajatala area as nearly 48 hours have passed since the horrific burning alive of five puppies, with police yet to make any arrests in the case. The incident, which occurred in Hatpukur under Jagachha Police Station limits, has sparked allegations of police inaction from local residents.
Police Investigation Faces Hurdles
Despite having CCTV footage from Saturday night and conducting subsequent questioning, law enforcement officials have not apprehended any suspects. Officers have indicated that a minor might be involved in the crime. Surinder Singh, the Deputy Commissioner (South) of Howrah City Police, explained the challenges to the media on Sunday.
"The culprits captured in the CCTV were fully covered in winter clothing, making it difficult to identify them," Singh stated. He further added, "There is no eyewitness. We hope to catch the miscreants soon." This lack of clear identification has seemingly slowed down the investigative process.
Locals and Activists Voice Anger and Allegations
The delay in action has not sat well with the community and animal welfare organizations. On Sunday morning, representatives from the Haji Harun Rashid Khan Memorial Trust, a social and animal welfare organization, met with the Officer-in-Charge of the police station.
Masood Alam Khan, the president of the trust, expressed his shock upon reading about the incident. "I was extremely shocked to read this news today. We visited the spot in the morning," he said. Khan revealed that locals have provided police with information about potential suspects.
"These are regular offenders who often harass and beat street dogs, cats, and bulls after drinking," Khan alleged. He raised a serious concern, stating, "Locals allege these individuals are influential. If no action is taken against such barbaric acts, it will send the wrong message to society, and the miscreants will feel emboldened."
Collaboration for Awareness and Future Prevention
A Howrah City Police officer confirmed the meeting with the trust and highlighted a future initiative. The officer noted that the trust regularly provides food and shelter for street animals in various areas. "They, along with the city police, will soon start working together to raise public awareness about animal abuse," the officer said.
The call for swift justice has been echoed by others as well. Social worker and animal lover Banani Kakkar has also contacted Jagachha Police Station, urging them to take immediate and decisive action in the case. The collective demand is for the perpetrators to be held accountable to prevent such acts of cruelty from recurring.
