Ahmedabad: Mahavirsinh Sindhav, a 35-year-old history-sheeter with a lengthy criminal record, died on Monday night after falling from the fourth floor of a residential complex in Bopal. The incident occurred as he allegedly attempted to flee from police intervention following a disturbance in the society.
Background of the Incident
According to police officials, Sindhav, who originally hailed from Chokdi village in Surendranagar district, had recently moved into a flat at Akshar Luxuria in Bopal. On the night of the incident, he was reportedly under the influence of alcohol and engaged in a heated argument with residents of another block within the complex. The verbal altercation quickly escalated into a physical scuffle, prompting concerned residents to dial the emergency helpline number 112.
Police Response and Escalation
Ahmedabad Rural Superintendent of Police Omprakash Jat stated that when a police team arrived at the apartment complex in response to the distress call, Sindhav allegedly cut off the electricity supply to the building. This action caused the police personnel to become temporarily trapped in the lift. In the ensuing chaos, Sindhav attempted to make his escape. However, during his flight, he fell from the fourth floor of the building. He sustained fatal injuries and was pronounced dead at the scene.
Legal Proceedings
The Bopal police have registered a case of accidental death and have initiated a thorough investigation into the circumstances surrounding the incident. The body of the deceased was transported to Sola Civil Hospital for a postmortem examination. Following the autopsy, the remains were handed over to family members for the performance of last rites in his native village.
Previous Notoriety
Sindhav first came into the public eye in 2020 when he made a high-profile appearance at a folk music event in Morbi district featuring performers Rajbha Gadhvi and Devayat Khavad. Videos of his arrival, which showed him accompanied by a convoy of luxury vehicles and showering currency notes on stage, went viral on social media platforms.
Prior to his criminal activities, Sindhav had served as a supply soldier in the Indian Army. However, he later became entangled in multiple criminal cases. In 2023, police linked him to a drug network based in Surendranagar after three men were apprehended with narcotics worth Rs 17.81 lakh from an apartment. During the investigation, authorities discovered that the flat had allegedly been arranged through Sindhav's involvement.
Alleged Gang Connections
Police had also cited suspected links between Sindhav and associates of the Lawrence Bishnoi gang, although no court ruling has confirmed such a connection. In another case registered in 2023, he was accused of carrying out a daylight robbery at gunpoint in Chokdi village and was subsequently arrested.
Ongoing Investigation
Police have stated that further inquiries are underway to determine the exact sequence of events that led to Monday night's fatal incident. Authorities are examining all aspects, including the possibility of any other individuals being involved, as they continue to piece together the final moments of Mahavirsinh Sindhav's life.
