Himachal HC Stays Chamba MC President, Vice-President Election Results

The Himachal Pradesh High Court has issued a stay on the election results for the posts of president and vice-president of the Chamba Municipal Corporation (MC). The order was passed by a single bench of Justice Sandeep Sharma on Tuesday, following a petition filed by a candidate alleging irregularities in the election process.

The petitioner, who had contested for the post of president, claimed that the election was conducted in a biased manner and that the returning officer had not followed the prescribed procedures. The court, after hearing the arguments, directed that the results of the elections held on June 8, 2026, be kept in abeyance until further orders.

The High Court also issued notices to the state government, the Chamba Municipal Corporation, and the returning officer, seeking their responses within four weeks. The matter is now scheduled for the next hearing in July 2026.

This stay has put a halt to the declaration of results for the top two positions in the municipal body, which were keenly contested. The Chamba MC has been without an elected president and vice-president for several months, and the elections were held to fill these vacancies.

Local political parties have reacted cautiously, with some welcoming the court's intervention to ensure a fair process. The state government has not yet issued an official statement on the matter.
