Violence Erupts During Ram Navami Processions in Hazaribag, Resulting in Fatalities and Injuries
Early on Sunday, Hazaribag town in Jharkhand witnessed tragic violence during Ram Navami processions, with police reporting that two young men were allegedly killed and over 450 people sustained injuries. The incident has sent shockwaves through the community, prompting urgent investigations and calls for peace.
Details of the Deceased Victims
The deceased have been identified as Prince Kumar, a 19-year-old from Silwar village under the Muffasil police station limits, and Abhishek Sharma, a 20-year-old resident of the Gwaltoli area in Bara Bazar. Both young men were reportedly watching the processions when they became victims of the escalating violence.
Circumstances Leading to the Deaths
According to sources, Prince Kumar was observing the processions at Jhanda Chowk around 6 am when he suffered injuries from a sword after approaching too close to akhara members who were displaying weapons. He was initially taken to Sheikh Bhikhari Medical College and Hospital (SBMCH) but was referred to Ranchi for advanced treatment. Tragically, he succumbed to his injuries during the journey.
In a separate incident, Abhishek Sharma's friend, Rahul Kumar, recounted that they were also at Jhanda Chowk around 2:30 am when a group of youths began assaulting Abhishek with lathis. "Bleeding profusely, we rushed him to the hospital, but he was referred to Ranchi and died on the way," Rahul stated, highlighting the severity of the attack.
Aftermath and Public Response
Following Abhishek's death, his relatives and family members gathered at Bara Bazar chowk with his body, demanding the immediate arrest of those responsible for the violence. Sadar sub-divisional officer Aditya Pandey intervened at the scene, pacifying the agitators by assuring them that authorities are actively working to identify and apprehend the culprits. He emphasized that police are meticulously scanning CCTV footage to determine the exact circumstances surrounding the two deaths.
Root Causes and Extent of Violence
Sources indicate that the violence stemmed from altercations between two akharas over the movement of processions, which quickly escalated into widespread clashes. The confrontations involved stone-pelting and the vandalism of vehicles, DJ systems, and lighting equipment, contributing to the chaotic atmosphere.
Medical Response and Injury Toll
Dr. Abhishek Kumar, a surgeon at SBMCH, provided insight into the medical aftermath, stating, "More than 450 injured people received treatment at the hospital. The rest were treated at medical stalls set up by different non-governmental organizations. Seven individuals with critical injuries were referred to Ranchi for better medical care." This high number of casualties underscores the scale of the violence and the strain on local healthcare resources.
Ongoing Investigations and Community Impact
Police authorities are continuing their investigations into the incident, focusing on identifying the perpetrators and understanding the triggers of the violence. The community remains on edge, with calls for enhanced security measures during religious events to prevent such tragedies in the future. This event has raised concerns about communal tensions and the need for proactive measures to ensure public safety during large gatherings.
