Haryana Women's Commission Demands Strict Legal Action Over Offensive Online Content
In a significant move to protect women's dignity, Haryana State Women's Commission Chairperson Renu Bhatia declared on Tuesday that mere apologies will no longer suffice in cases involving obscene or derogatory content targeting women. She emphasized that strict legal action must be the standard response moving forward.
Call for Dedicated Monitoring System
During her visit to Hisar as the chief guest at the Nari Shakti Vandan Sankalp Yatra, Bhatia interacted with mediapersons and outlined the Commission's proactive stance. The padyatra, organized to mark the implementation of the Nari Shakti Vandan Act by the Centre, saw participation from a large number of women and was presided over by BJP district president Dr Asha Khedar.
Bhatia revealed that the Commission has formally written to the Chief Minister of Haryana, seeking the creation of a separate department or the appointment of a nodal officer. This dedicated entity would be tasked with monitoring objectionable songs, reels, and social media content that degrade women.
Addressing the Impact of Harmful Content
Highlighting the pervasive issue, Bhatia pointed out that several songs and short videos circulating online severely undermine the dignity of women and have a negative impact on society as a whole. "There is an urgent need for a robust system that can immediately take cognisance and initiate swift action against such harmful content," she asserted.
She referenced specific incidents involving controversial lyrics, including those linked to popular singer Badshah, noting a troubling pattern where offenders often issue apologies and escape meaningful consequences. The Commission is determined to end this trend and ensure accountability.
Recent Case and Broader Responsibility
Bhatia also mentioned a recent case involving singer Masoom Sharma, confirming that police action has already been initiated and he has been summoned for questioning. This serves as a clear example of the Commission's commitment to follow-through.
"Artists and content creators must understand and embrace their social responsibility," Bhatia added, urging those in influential positions to be more mindful of the messages they propagate.
The Commission's firm stance signals a shift towards more stringent enforcement and protection measures, aiming to foster a safer and more respectful digital environment for women in Haryana and beyond.
