A 32-year-old woman employed at a private company in Gurgaon allegedly died by suicide at Worldmark, the commercial complex housing her office. Her husband was taken into custody on Thursday after an FIR was registered against him and his parents on charges of abetment to suicide, following a complaint lodged by the woman's brother.
Incident Details
The woman, who worked at Birla Estates' office in Sector 65, died on Wednesday afternoon. Her brother alleged that she had been subjected to mental, physical, and financial harassment by her husband and his family after their marriage. Specifically, he claimed that the woman was assaulted by her husband and had told him on April 27 that she was beaten with belts. Photographs of her injuries have been preserved as evidence, according to the brother.
Police received information around 2 pm on Wednesday regarding the incident at Tower 3 of the Worldmark complex. By the time officers arrived at the scene, security guards had already transported her to CK Birla Hospital, where doctors pronounced her dead. Her body was later moved to the government mortuary for an autopsy.
Legal Action
The Sector 65 police station registered an FIR under sections 108 (abetment to suicide) and 3(5) of the BNS against the husband and other accused. An officer stated, "The family will be interrogated. If any such instances come forward, we will take necessary action against the accused."
Brother's Account
The brother told police that he spoke to his sister at 12:07 pm on Tuesday. He said, "She seemed unsettled. However, she didn't show any sign of distress indicating that she would take the extreme step." Approximately two hours later, the family received a call informing them that she had died by suicide.
The family alleged that she was not allowed to keep her salary of Rs 12 lakh annually and was forced to give all of it to her husband, who refused to share anything for her personal expenses. The brother claimed he regularly sent money to his sister for her daily needs. According to the police complaint, she was frequently taunted by her husband over caste differences, and her mother-in-law supported her son when he beat his wife. The woman and her husband belong to different castes. When she visited her parents' home in Dehradun, she was allegedly threatened with divorce.
The brother also posted a video on social media seeking support for justice. He said, "She was married in Meerut and used to commute daily from Meerut to Gurgaon for work. Her husband, a chartered accountant, harassed her for a long time."
