A man was taken into custody by Gurgaon police on Wednesday after he allegedly shot at his neighbour, escalating a long-standing quarrel over water flowing from his property onto the street. The dramatic incident, which sent shockwaves through Bar Gurjar village, fortunately resulted in no injuries.
Threats Preceded Gunfire in Residential Area
The sequence of events began on Tuesday night around 9 pm. The accused, identified as Dinesh alias Dhanni, who is a farmer, reportedly made a threatening phone call to his neighbour, Jayveer Rathi. Rathi, a building material supplier, was warned to stop the water leakage from his house or face severe consequences. "The caller told him, ‘I will shoot you,'" a police officer stated, recounting the threat.
Approximately an hour after the ominous call, the situation turned violent. Dinesh allegedly arrived at Rathi's residence in a black Thar SUV. Finding Rathi standing outside his house, the accused opened fire. In a bid to save his life, Rathi rushed inside his home. Undeterred, the assailant allegedly fired three to four more rounds, damaging two parked vehicles—a Maruti Brezza and a Swift—before speeding away from the scene.
Police Investigation and Swift Arrest
Officials from the Bar Gurjar police post, under the Kherki Daula police station, swiftly reached the location. A forensic team inspected the crime scene, collecting ballistic samples and other crucial evidence for analysis. Based on the complaint filed by Jayveer Rathi and the initial findings, a formal case was registered.
The charges invoked were serious: Section 109 (attempt to murder) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) alongside relevant sections of the Arms Act. A dedicated team from the Manesar crime branch pursued the investigation and successfully apprehended Dinesh by Wednesday evening.
Root Cause: A Frustration Over Water
Initial interrogation revealed that the core of the conflict was mundane yet persistent. Dinesh, frustrated by water from Rathi's house repeatedly flowing onto the street, had asked his neighbour multiple times to address the issue. These requests had led to frequent arguments between the two families, who share the same compound. A relative of the complainant confirmed that the two had argued earlier on Tuesday evening over the same issue before the threatening call was made later that night.
"Frustrated, Dinesh, along with his accomplices, carried out the firing," the investigating officer explained. The police are now focused on identifying and tracing these accomplices, as well as recovering the weapon and the SUV used in the crime.
While the gunfire caused significant panic in the neighbourhood, authorities confirmed that no one was physically hurt. The damaged cars have been examined, and a special report on the incident has been submitted to the area magistrate and senior police officials.
