Major Collision on NH44 Leaves Trail of Destruction
A severe multi-vehicle pile-up on the busy Mathura-Delhi Road, National Highway 44, in Gurgaon late on Thursday night resulted in at least six people sustaining injuries, with one of them in a critical condition. The chaotic incident, which caused extensive damage to three vehicles, occurred around 11:30 PM near the Old Metro Station area.
Sequence of a Drunken Crash
According to eyewitness accounts and police reports, the chain-reaction collision was triggered by a Mahindra Scorpio, driven by Dev Vart, a resident of Faridabad's Sector 31. Witnesses stated that Dev was "heavily intoxicated" and driving at high speed in a rash manner.
The sequence of events unfolded as the black Scorpio (HR51CP9397) first slammed into the rear of a goods auto. After the initial impact, the out-of-control SUV then sideswiped a Mercedes car before forcefully ramming into a Mahindra Thar. The violent series of collisions left a scene of mangled metal on the highway.
Victims and Aftermath
Among the seriously injured was Gurdayal Singh (33), a Delhi-based delivery driver who was returning to the capital after completing a work assignment in Faridabad. His brother, Santok Singh, received a distressing call from Gurdayal's phone informing him of the accident.
Upon rushing to the spot, Santok found a crowd gathered around the four damaged vehicles: the Scorpio, the Thar (DL7CW1401), the Mercedes (DL2CBA0744), and his brother's auto (DL1LAP0381). Gurdayal suffered grievous injuries and was initially rushed to BK Hospital. Due to the severity of his condition, doctors later referred him to Safdarjung Hospital in Delhi for advanced treatment. Santok confirmed that his brother's condition remained critical.
Police Action and Legal Consequences
The Gurgaon police acted swiftly, arresting the Scorpio driver, Dev Vart, at the scene. He was subsequently sent to judicial custody. A medical examination conducted at BK Hospital confirmed the presence of alcohol in Dev's system, corroborating the eyewitness testimonies, a police officer confirmed.
This incident has once again highlighted the grave dangers of drunk and reckless driving on India's national highways, especially during late-night hours. The investigation into the exact circumstances and the extent of charges is ongoing.
