A significant encounter between security forces and terrorists is currently unfolding in the Majalta area of Udhampur district in Jammu and Kashmir. The operation was initiated on Tuesday after a joint team established contact with the militants based on specific intelligence.
Operation Launched on Precise Police Input
According to officials, the Inspector General of Police (IGP) for the Jammu Zone confirmed the development. The contact was made in Village Soan, located in Majalta, Udhampur. The operation was launched following what was described as a "precise input" from the Jammu and Kashmir Police (JKP).
In a social media post on platform X, the IGP stated, "On a precise input from JKP, contact established with terrorists at Village Soan, Majalta Udhampur. Joint team of SOG along with Army and CRPF on job." This highlights the coordinated effort involving the police's Special Operations Group (SOG), the Indian Army, and the Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF).
How the Gunfight Erupted
Official sources detailed that the gunfight broke out during a cordon-and-search operation. Joint teams comprising the Army, police, and paramilitary forces had launched the operation in the Soan–Martha area of Majalta tehsil.
"As the security forces intensified the search operation, the hiding terrorists opened fire, which was retaliated to, triggering an encounter," an official explained. The exchange of fire began after the forces closed in on the suspected location, prompting the terrorists to initiate shooting.
Current Status and Security Measures
At the time of initial reporting, intermittent firing was still ongoing. To bolster the operation and ensure no escapes, reinforcements have been rushed to the spot.
In a critical move to trap the militants, security forces have plugged all possible escape routes in the surrounding area. This cordon is intended to prevent the terrorists from fleeing the encounter site and to bring the operation to a conclusive end.
The situation remains fluid, and security forces are proceeding with caution in the challenging terrain of Udhampur district.
