Gujarat High Court Temporarily Suspends Wednesday Hearings for Oldest Cases

The Gujarat High Court in Ahmedabad has announced a temporary suspension of its Wednesday hearings dedicated to the oldest pending cases. This decision comes in response to mounting pressure from bail and quashing matters, as well as demands raised by the Bar Association. The court aims to streamline its heavy pre-vacation criminal docket effectively.

Notification Details and New Arrangements

A high court notification stated that there will be no final hearing day on Wednesdays for the next three weeks, until the summer vacation begins. Instead, all fresh, admission, notice, and adjourned matters will be listed on specific dates: April 22, April 29, and May 6. These will be heard alongside cases already assigned from the Wednesday Weekly Board.

The notification explained, "This arrangement has been made taking into consideration the pressure of bail and quashing matters before the summer vacation, and the existing system will be resumed upon reopening of the courts after the vacation." This move is designed to manage the court's workload more efficiently during this busy period.

Background of the Wednesday Hearing Initiative

In July 2025, the Gujarat High Court implemented a plan to dedicate every Wednesday exclusively to hearing the 100 oldest pending cases. This initiative was aimed at expediting the disposal of long-pending matters and reducing judicial backlog. Since then, each bench has been consistently hearing these old cases every Wednesday as part of this strategy.

As part of this plan, the court has been preparing and publishing in advance a list of such cases under the title 'Wednesday Weekly List (WWL)'. This list helps in organizing and prioritizing the oldest cases for timely resolution.

Exclusions from the Wednesday Weekly List

Certain categories of old cases have been specifically excluded from the WWL to ensure focus on actionable matters. These exclusions include:

  • Cases where hearings were completed and judgments reserved.
  • Part-heard matters that are still in progress.
  • Cases where proceedings have been stayed by the Supreme Court.
  • Matters adjourned sine die due to pendency before the apex court.

These exclusions help the court concentrate on cases that are ready for final hearings without legal impediments.

Resumption Plans After Summer Break

Regular final hearings on the oldest pending matters are scheduled to resume after the four-week summer break. The court is expected to reopen in the first week of June, at which point the Wednesday hearing system for old cases will be reinstated. This temporary pause is seen as a strategic adjustment to handle immediate pressures before the vacation period.

The Gujarat High Court's proactive measures highlight its commitment to judicial efficiency and responsiveness to the demands of the legal community. By temporarily reallocating resources, the court aims to address urgent matters while maintaining its long-term goal of reducing case backlogs.
