Three Gujarat Police Constables Face Charges in Liquor Smuggling Case
Three policemen from Gujarat's Dahod district now face serious legal trouble. Authorities have booked them for allegedly attempting to smuggle liquor from neighboring Rajasthan. The incident unfolded dramatically when their vehicle crashed during a police chase.
The Sunday Night Operation
Chakaliya police station officials received specific intelligence on Sunday night. This tip-off triggered immediate surveillance along suspected smuggling routes. Police teams positioned themselves strategically, waiting for the suspected vehicles to appear.
The accused policemen have been identified as Head Constables Arjun Bhuriya and Mohan Taviyad, along with Constable Prakash Hathila. All three officers were posted at the Chakaliya police station itself, making the allegations particularly serious.
The Two-Car Smuggling Tactic
According to police officials, the accused employed a common bootlegging strategy. They used two vehicles traveling together in formation. Bhuriya and Hathila traveled ahead in a white Alto car, serving as lookouts.
Taviyad followed behind in another vehicle that actually carried the liquor consignment. This arrangement allowed the lead car to warn the liquor-carrying vehicle about any police presence or checkpoints along the route.
The Chase and Crash
When police officers spotted the Alto car and signaled it to stop, the driver accelerated instead. The vehicle fled the scene immediately. Police then sighted the second car, which also attempted to evade capture.
A chase ensued along Limdi road. While Bhuriya and Hathila managed to escape toward Limdi, Taviyad lost control of his vehicle during the pursuit. His car plunged into a stormwater drain along the roadside.
Taviyad abandoned the vehicle and fled the scene on foot. He left behind both the damaged car and the illicit alcohol cargo.
The Recovery and Investigation
Police conducted a thorough inspection of the abandoned vehicle. They recovered three boxes containing beer cans and five boxes holding quarter bottles of whisky. The total value of the seized liquor reached Rs 66,646.
Authorities also impounded the abandoned car, which they estimated to be worth approximately Rs 5 lakh. The vehicle now forms part of the evidence in the ongoing investigation.
Police have registered a case against all three constables under relevant sections of the law. The investigation continues as authorities work to determine the full scope of the alleged smuggling operation.
This incident raises serious questions about police integrity in the region. It highlights how some officers might be involved in activities they are supposed to prevent. The case has drawn significant attention to border security between Gujarat and Rajasthan.
