Gujarat Police Arrest 136 Loan Sharks in Intensive Statewide Campaign
In a significant crackdown on illegal lending activities, the Gujarat government announced on Tuesday that a month-long special drive against loan sharks has resulted in the arrest of 136 individuals across the state. The intensive campaign, conducted from March 15 to April 14, was carried out under the direct supervision of Director General of Police (DGP) K L N Rao, aiming to curb the menace of unregulated moneylending and protect vulnerable citizens from exploitation.
Widespread Enforcement Leads to Multiple Cases and Arrests
According to an official statement released by the state authorities, the drive saw a total of 110 cases registered against loan sharks in various districts of Gujarat. The coordinated efforts by law enforcement agencies led to the apprehension of 136 accused persons, highlighting the scale of illegal lending operations in the region. This proactive initiative underscores the government's commitment to tackling financial crimes and ensuring public safety.
Violent Incident in Surat Highlights Dangers of Loan Sharking
The government release cited a specific instance to illustrate the severe risks associated with loan sharking. Ayush, a youth from Surat facing financial difficulties, borrowed Rs 20,000 from an individual named Preet, also known as Bheem Sosa. When Ayush requested additional time to repay the loan, the accused, Preet and his associate Ankit Thakor, allegedly confronted him on the road. They subjected him to verbal abuse and threatened to kill him with a knife if he failed to make immediate payment.
In response to this alarming case, the Surat police swiftly took action, arresting both Preet and Ankit Thakor. Legal proceedings were initiated against them under the Prevention of Anti-Social Activities Act (PASA), demonstrating the authorities' zero-tolerance approach towards such coercive and violent tactics used by loan sharks.
Government's Firm Stance Against Financial Exploitation
This month-long drive reflects the Gujarat government's determined stance against illegal moneylending practices that often trap individuals in cycles of debt and fear. By conducting such targeted operations, the state aims to dismantle networks of loan sharks and provide relief to victims, particularly those in economically distressed situations. The arrests serve as a strong deterrent to others involved in similar unlawful activities, reinforcing the message that financial exploitation will not be tolerated.
The success of this campaign is expected to pave the way for continued vigilance and enforcement actions to safeguard citizens from predatory lending, ensuring a safer financial environment across Gujarat.
