Delhi Police Arrest Two Auto-Lifters Who Used GPS Trackers to Steal Cars
GPS-Using Auto Thieves Arrested in Delhi's Dwarka

In a sophisticated car theft operation, Delhi Police have apprehended two individuals who allegedly used GPS tracking devices to monitor and later steal vehicles that came to their mechanic workshop for repairs. The accused, identified as Amir (38) and Sarwar Ali (37), were arrested from the Bindapur area in Dwarka.

The Modus Operandi: A Mechanic's Deceit

The duo's elaborate scheme was uncovered following the theft of a Hyundai i20 car reported from Mohan Garden in Uttam Nagar on December 8. According to police, the complainant had parked her malfunctioning vehicle overnight, only to find it missing the next morning. An investigation was immediately launched.

Police revealed the accused's method. When customers brought their cars to the workshop for servicing or repairs, the men would secretly install GPS tracking devices on the vehicles. Simultaneously, they would get duplicate keys made with the help of a key maker. They would then patiently track the vehicle's movements for weeks, waiting for the perfect opportunity to steal it from its parked location.

CCTV Footage and the 300-Camera Trail

The breakthrough in the case came from meticulous analysis of surveillance footage. CCTV footage from the scene of the i20 theft showed one of the accused arriving in a Hyundai i10 car and then driving away with the stolen vehicle.

Officers embarked on a digital manhunt, scanning footage from nearly 300 CCTV cameras across the city to trace the route of the i10 used in the crime. This painstaking effort led them to trace the i10 and identify Amir as its buyer. This identification eventually led to the detention of both Amir and his associate, Sarwar.

Recoveries and Ongoing Probe

During interrogation, the accused reportedly confessed to their technique. Following their arrest, the police conducted raids and made significant recoveries. From the accused, the police have recovered three stolen cars, including the Hyundai i10 used during the theft. Additionally, law enforcement seized nine number plates, an iPad, and a scanning sensor.

The case has shed light on a high-tech method of auto theft, raising concerns for vehicle owners. The Delhi Police have stated that further investigation is underway to determine if the accused are involved in more such crimes and to identify their entire network.
