In a significant crackdown on narcotics smuggling, the Air Intelligence Unit (AIU) of Goa Customs intercepted a massive consignment of high-grade hydroponic cannabis at the Manohar International Airport in Mopa. The seizure, valued at a staggering Rs 3.2 crore in the illegal market, underscores the ongoing efforts to curb drug trafficking through Indian airports.
Specific Intel Leads to Major Interception
Acting on precise intelligence inputs, customs officers at Mopa airport kept a close watch on a passenger who had arrived from Bangkok via Tashkent. Upon his arrival, the officials moved swiftly to intercept the individual for a detailed check.
A thorough examination of his checked-in baggage revealed the contraband cleverly concealed beneath layers of clothing. The officers recovered over 9 kilograms of hydroponic cannabis, a potent variety of the drug.
Testing, Seizure, and Arrest Under NDPS Act
The suspected substance was immediately tested on-site using an NDPS field testing kit, which confirmed the presence of cannabis. Following the positive test result, the customs department formally seized the illegal consignment.
The passenger was subsequently placed under arrest under the stringent provisions of the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act, 1985. This act prescribes severe penalties for the production, possession, and sale of banned substances.
High-Value Hydroponic Weed and Ongoing Probe
Hydroponic cannabis is cultivated using advanced indoor techniques without soil, often resulting in a product with higher potency. Due to this enhanced strength, it commands a significantly higher price in the illicit drug market compared to traditional cannabis.
The customs department has launched a comprehensive investigation into the seizure. The probe aims to uncover potential smuggling networks and identify any other individuals who may be involved in this international drug trafficking operation. Further details are expected to emerge as the investigation progresses.
