Goa Police Identify Delhi Student as Driver in Fatal Assagao Crash
Goa Police have officially identified 19-year-old BBA student Shaurya Goyal as the driver of the Mahindra Thar involved in the deadly Assagao accident that claimed the life of a 65-year-old tourist. The confirmation comes a day after the incident, with authorities dismissing earlier speculation about a woman being at the wheel.
Details of the Tragic Collision
According to police reports, the collision occurred around 5:50 PM on Monday near a junction in Assagao. The Thar, traveling from Mapusa towards Anjuna, allegedly lost control and crashed head-on into a Hyundai i20 coming from the opposite direction. The impact proved fatal for Bhagat Ram Sharma, a tourist from Bhopal who was declared dead upon arrival at Mapusa District Hospital.
Sharma's wife, Leela Sharma (59), sustained a leg fracture in the accident, while a three-month-old infant in the vehicle suffered minor injuries. Police confirmed that medical examination of Shaurya Goyal ruled out alcohol consumption at the time of the crash.
Neighbors Describe Reserved, Academically Focused Teen
In south Delhi's Hauz Khas neighborhood, where Goyal resides with his family, neighbors expressed surprise at his involvement in the incident. Residents described the 19-year-old as a quiet teenager who mostly kept to himself and was serious about his studies.
"He was focused on academics and usually came home on weekends," said one neighbor from Y Block in Hauz Khas. Another resident added, "I've seen him drive occasionally, but generally he took a cab for commuting. He rarely drove."
Goyal is the elder of two siblings in a family engaged in the jewellery business. His younger sister is currently a school student, while he was pursuing his second year of BBA at a private university near Delhi.
Police Investigation and Legal Proceedings
Anjuna Police have registered an FIR against Goyal for causing death by negligence and rash driving. The 19-year-old was arrested following the incident but has since been released on bail. Police Inspector Suraj Gawas from Anjuna Police Station emphasized that CCTV footage clearly shows Goyal at the wheel during the accident.
"No witness told us that a girl was driving. The footage clearly shows Shaurya Goyal at the wheel," Gawas stated, adding that anyone with contrary information should approach investigators directly.
The investigation is being handled by PSI Saish Kinlekar, with police confirming that further examination into the circumstances of the crash is continuing as legal proceedings move forward in Goa.
Friends Dismiss Online Speculation
A childhood friend of Goyal came forward to reject circulating claims about seat-switching during the accident. "We studied in the same school and grew up together. He has always been academically inclined," the friend explained. "Many things circulating online—especially claims about seat-switching—are not true. He's extremely disturbed by what has happened."
Shock in Victim's Hometown
Back in Bhopal's Sundar Nagar, neighbors of Bhagat Ram Sharma expressed disbelief at the tragic news. "He and his wife had visited just days ago. We still can't believe this," said a long-time acquaintance of the family.
Sharma, who ran a television repair business, is survived by his wife and three children, all of whom are IT professionals based in Delhi. The family now faces the difficult task of coping with their sudden loss while legal proceedings continue in Goa.
As the investigation progresses, authorities are piecing together the exact sequence of events that led to the fatal collision, with attention focused on determining whether mechanical failure, road conditions, or driver error contributed to the tragedy.
