Davanagere Police Crack Down on Honey Trap Extortion Ring
In a significant development, Davanagere police have apprehended four individuals following a complaint from a 66-year-old local businessman who alleged he was ensnared in a honey trap scheme designed to extort money from him. The arrested suspects have been identified as Sushmita, Channabasappa, Krishna, and Rahul, all residents of Davanagere. Authorities are actively searching for the primary accused, Sanjana, who is currently absconding.
Elaborate Scheme to Target Prominent Businessman
According to police reports, the group meticulously planned their operation. Sushmita, who works as a nurse, initiated contact with the businessman, who is known to be associated with a political party. Over time, their relationship grew increasingly intimate. Recently, Sushmita approached the businessman, claiming to face financial difficulties and requesting assistance.
She later invited him to an apartment under the pretext of discussing the matter further. During this meeting, Sanjana accompanied Sushmita and entered the room with the businessman. Police stated that while the businessman was in a semi-nude state with the young woman, the other accomplices forcibly entered the room and recorded a video on a mobile phone.
Extortion Threats and Financial Demands
The group allegedly used the compromising video as leverage, threatening to release it online unless the businessman paid Rs 25 lakh. In his complaint filed at the Vidyanagar police station, the victim reported, "I came to offer Rs 12 lakh, but they extorted Rs 1 lakh from me." This highlights the coercive tactics employed by the accused to extract money under duress.
Investigations reveal that the scheme was premeditated, with roles clearly assigned among the group members to maximize pressure on the victim. The use of digital recording to blackmail individuals represents a growing trend in such criminal activities, posing serious challenges for law enforcement.
