A heartbreaking incident in Maharashtra's Jalgaon city claimed the lives of a young girl and her father on Friday morning after they came into contact with a live overhead wire on their terrace. The victims have been identified as 35-year-old Maulana Sabir Khan and his 12-year-old daughter, Aliya.
The Chain of Events on the Fateful Morning
According to an officer from the MIDC police station, the sequence of events began around 10:30 AM on Friday. Water had accumulated on the terrace of the family's house in the Aksanagar area due to a clogged pipe. Aliya went up to clear the blockage using a rod. In a tragic turn, the rod or Aliya herself came into contact with an overhead electrical wire, leading to a severe electric shock.
Her nine-year-old cousin, Maria, who was playing on the terrace at the time, saw the incident and rushed to help. In her attempt to rescue Aliya, Maria also suffered burn injuries.
A Father's Fatal Attempt to Rescue
Hearing the screams from the terrace, Sabir Khan, who was resting inside the house, ran upstairs in a desperate bid to save his daughter and niece. In the panic, he did not take any precautionary measures and was also electrocuted by the same live wire, police stated.
Alert neighbours intervened just in time to prevent Khan's wife and son from approaching the scene and potentially suffering the same fate. They managed to rescue the injured Maria and rushed her to a hospital, where she is currently recovering from her burn injuries.
New Home Turns Tragic
Adding to the profound sorrow of the incident is the fact that the Khan family had moved into the Aksanagar house just a fortnight ago. The MIDC police have registered a case of accidental death and are investigating the circumstances surrounding the presence of the hazardous overhead wire so close to the residential terrace.
This tragic accident underscores the critical importance of electrical safety audits for homes, especially in older buildings or areas with haphazard wiring. It serves as a grim reminder of the ever-present dangers posed by exposed wires and the need for extreme caution when dealing with electrical fixtures or performing tasks near them.
