A burglary was reported at the Nagpur residence of former University Grants Commission (UGC) chairman and Padma Shri awardee, Dr Sukhadeo Thorat, on Wednesday. The incident occurred in the Dabha area, which falls under the jurisdiction of the Gittikhadan police station.

Discovery of the Break-In

The crime was discovered by the house caretaker, who found the main door lock broken and household items in disarray. The caretaker immediately alerted Dr Thorat, who was out of town with his family. The family had left Nagpur on Tuesday, and the intruder is believed to have struck at midnight, forcing open the front door lock to gain entry.

Police Investigation Underway

Upon receiving the complaint, senior police officials swiftly arrived at the scene. Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCP) Nityanand Jha and Senior Police Inspector of Gittikhadan police, Kailash Deshmane, led a contingent to conduct a detailed panchnama (spot inspection and evidence documentation).

The intruder reportedly ransacked a cupboard inside the house before fleeing. The police have launched a thorough investigation to identify and apprehend the suspect. A key part of this probe involves examining CCTV footage from the vicinity of the upscale neighborhood.

The burglary at the home of such a distinguished academic and former head of a premier national body has raised concerns about security in the area. The Gittikhadan police are pursuing all leads and have not yet disclosed if any valuable items were stolen. The investigation remains active as authorities work to piece together the sequence of events from Wednesday night.
