An elderly man was shot dead by two unidentified assailants during a morning walk in Uttar Pradesh's Prayagraj district on Saturday, police said.
The incident took place around 6 am in the Kareli area when the victim, identified as 65-year-old Ram Naresh Patel, was standing at a crossing. Two men on a motorcycle arrived and opened fire at him, according to Assistant Commissioner of Police (ACP) Kareli, Vinay Singh.
Patel was rushed to a nearby hospital where doctors declared him brought dead. The attackers fled the scene after the shooting.
Police have registered a case and launched a probe into the murder. “We are examining CCTV footage from nearby cameras and questioning locals to identify the accused. The motive is not yet known,” the ACP said.
Patel, a retired government employee, used to go for a morning walk daily. His family members said they had no known enmity with anyone.
Senior police officials visited the spot and assured strict action. Additional forces have been deployed in the area to prevent any untoward incident.
This is the second such incident in the city in recent months, raising concerns over law and order. In April, a businessman was shot dead in a similar manner.
