A 56-year-old woman sustained injuries to her ears when a miscreant forcibly removed her gold earrings and fled from a BMTC bus stop on Hosur Road near Johnson Market on Sunday night. The incident occurred around 8:10 PM while the woman, identified as Ameerbi, was waiting for a bus to her residence in Neelasandra.
Details of the Incident
Ameerbi, a resident of Munegowda Garden in Neelasandra, works at a convention hall near Johnson Market. She told police that an unknown masked man, who was also waiting at the bus stop, approached her when she was alone and casually asked if a bus to Neelasandra was expected. He then sat near her. As Ameerbi got up to check for the arrival of Route 143 bus, the miscreant attacked her from behind, pushed her onto the road, and attempted to pull off her earrings. Despite her screams for help, he yanked the earrings with force, one after the other, tearing her earlobes and causing injuries. He then escaped with both earrings.
Victim's Response and Police Action
The victim tried to chase the attacker but had to stop due to profuse bleeding. She went to a nearby mosque and called her daughter-in-law, who informed her husband, Mohammed Yousuf. He rushed to the spot and accompanied her to Ashok Nagar police station to file a complaint. Police took her to Bowring and Lady Curzon Hospital for treatment. A case was registered under BNS section 309 (Robbery). Ameerbi stated that the earrings weighed 6 grams and were worth over Rs 50,000.
Arrest of the Accused
Yousuf told TOI, "There is no lighting in the bus shelter or on the stretch. The miscreant took advantage of it to attack my mother." A senior police officer said CCTV footage from the area was reviewed, and clues led to the identification of the accused, Kanai Adhikari, 40, a native of West Bengal who had been working as a construction laborer in the city for the past six months. He was arrested within 24 hours of the incident.
