In a shocking display of recklessness, a traffic police sergeant in Kolkata narrowly escaped with his life after a drunk truck driver attempted to run him over during a routine traffic check on Thursday night. The incident has raised serious concerns about road safety and the dangers faced by traffic personnel on duty.
Close Call on Diamond Harbour Road
The terrifying encounter occurred around 11:30 PM on Thursday at a check naka located in Pathakpara, Behala. Sergeant Biprojit Biswas from the Diamond Harbour Road traffic guard was performing his duties when he spotted a fish-laden truck with Andhra Pradesh registration plates speeding dangerously down the road.
Biswas had already received an alert about the same vehicle, whose driver had earlier broken through a barrier at Behala Chowrasta, where other police officers had noted his intoxicated state. Acting on this information, the sergeant signaled the truck to stop for inspection.
The Dangerous Confrontation
Ignoring Biswas's clear signals to pull over, the truck driver instead attempted to accelerate away from the scene. Demonstrating remarkable presence of mind, Biswas positioned his police motorcycle in the vehicle's path to prevent the driver from escaping.
Rather than stopping, the heavy goods vehicle driver made the dangerous decision to ram directly into the police motorcycle. Biswas jumped away at the last possible moment, avoiding what could have been a fatal collision. While the sergeant escaped physical injury, his motorcycle sustained severe damage in the impact.
Arrest and Multiple Charges
The collision ultimately brought the speeding truck to a halt, allowing officers from Behala Police Station to apprehend the driver immediately. The accused now faces multiple serious charges under Indian law.
The driver has been charged with attempted murder of a police officer, driving under the influence of alcohol, and obstructing government work. The case highlights the severe consequences of drunk driving and assaulting law enforcement personnel.
