Drunk Constable Attacked While Mediating Youth Quarrel

In a shocking incident in Gadag, a police constable who attempted to mediate a quarrel among a group of youths, reportedly while under the influence of alcohol, was attacked by them on Thursday night. The constable is currently admitted to GIMS Hospital, and the police have apprehended five youths in connection with the assault.

Incident Details

According to video clips circulating on social media, two groups of youths were engaged in a heated argument on the road near Drinks Factory Bar in the Dhobi Ghat area. Ashok Patil, a constable attached to the Shirahatti police station, intervened to stop the clash. However, members of both groups allegedly turned on Patil and attacked him. In a troubling turn of events, another police officer in uniform was seen arriving at the scene but remained a passive observer.

Police Response

The Gadag rural police have registered a case regarding the incident. Superintendent of Police Rohan Jagadeesh informed TOI that five youths were quarreling at Dhobi Ghat. “One of our constables, who was off duty, intervened and stopped the quarrel with presence of mind. In the process, he sustained minor injuries. His effort is appreciated for stepping in even when he was not on duty. All five persons involved in the fight have been arrested and will be remanded in judicial custody. One among them is said to be a minor. The ages of the others are yet to be confirmed as they have not produced age proof,” he said.

Authorities are continuing their investigation into the matter. The constable's condition is reported to be stable. The incident has raised questions about the safety of off-duty police personnel and the effectiveness of intervention by fellow officers.
