Kurnool Police Identify Driver Fatigue as Key Factor in Deadly Road Accident
In a tragic incident that has shocked the region, Kurnool police have concluded their preliminary investigation into a horrific road accident near Chilakaladona village in Mantralayam mandal. The devastating crash, which occurred in the early hours of Thursday, resulted in the loss of eight lives and left thirteen others injured. Authorities have pinpointed driver fatigue as the primary cause behind this catastrophic event.
Police Investigation Reveals Critical Details
Kurnool Superintendent of Police Vikrant Patil provided detailed insights into the accident sequence. According to the investigation, the driver of a mini pick-up truck appears to have fallen asleep at the wheel. This critical lapse in alertness caused the vehicle to lose control, veer sharply to the right side of the road, jump over the road divider, and collide head-on with an oncoming truck traveling from the opposite direction.
SP Vikrant Patil expressed deep concern over the persistent nature of such incidents despite ongoing awareness campaigns. "It is profoundly unfortunate that despite our continuous efforts to educate drivers, these tragedies continue to occur," he stated. "We consistently emphasize to drivers undertaking long journeys the importance of taking breaks, washing their faces, and getting adequate rest before resuming travel. However, negligence remains a significant challenge."
Multiple Transport Violations Uncovered
The police investigation uncovered several serious transport regulation violations associated with the ill-fated vehicle. Most notably, the mini pick-up truck was operating without a valid permit. Furthermore, the vehicle was dangerously overloaded with twenty-one passengers on board, far exceeding safe capacity limits for such a light commercial vehicle.
The journey began from Tarikere in Chikkamagalur district at approximately 4:30 PM on Wednesday evening. Over the course of an overnight trip spanning approximately 375 kilometers, the driver reportedly had very little sleep. The fatigue culminated when the vehicle was passing through Chilakaladona village in the early morning hours, leading to the fatal accident.
Recurring Safety Concerns on Dangerous Stretch
This tragic incident has once again highlighted the perilous conditions on the Kotekal-Chilakaladona road stretch. Local residents and visiting devotees have voiced growing concerns about the frequency of fatal accidents in this area. In a similar tragedy near Kotekal on November 29 last year, five devotees from Karnataka lost their lives.
Multiple factors contribute to the dangerous conditions on this route:
- Sharp curves that challenge vehicle control
- Insufficient warning signs along critical sections
- Inadequate night lighting that reduces visibility
- Persistent problems with overspeeding vehicles
- Chronic issues with driver fatigue on long journeys
Community Demands Enhanced Safety Measures
With Mantralayam serving as a major pilgrimage destination attracting thousands of devotees annually, community members are urgently calling for comprehensive safety improvements. Residents and visitors alike have appealed to authorities to implement stricter safety protocols, including:
- Substantial upgrades to road infrastructure
- Enhanced lighting systems for night travel
- Strategic installation of warning boards at hazardous locations
- Effective speed control mechanisms
- Increased highway patrol presence for enforcement and assistance
The accident serves as a sobering reminder of the critical importance of road safety regulations, proper vehicle maintenance, and responsible driving practices, particularly on long-distance routes frequented by pilgrims and travelers.
