Kolkata: Senior advocate Dhiraj Kumar Trivedi was appointed as the Additional Solicitor General (ASG) for the Calcutta High Court on Tuesday. His appointment will be effective for a period of three years starting from June 9. Trivedi previously served as the Deputy Solicitor General in the same court, handling cases for the Enforcement Directorate (ED), the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI), and more recently, the Railways.
Background and Experience
Trivedi brings extensive experience in legal advocacy, particularly in matters involving central agencies. His appointment comes amid a series of changes in the state legal panel following the Bharatiya Janata Party's (BJP) electoral victory in West Bengal on May 4. He will succeed ASG Asok Kumar Chakrabarti, who held the position since 2022.
Significance of the Appointment
This appointment is part of a broader reshuffle in the legal representation of the central government in the state. Trivedi's familiarity with high-profile cases and his previous role as Deputy Solicitor General are expected to strengthen the government's legal team in the Calcutta High Court.
- Trivedi has represented the ED and CBI in numerous cases.
- He recently represented the Railways in legal matters.
- The appointment is for three years, effective June 9.
The change in the ASG position reflects the government's strategy to align legal resources with its policy objectives following the recent electoral gains.
