New Delhi: The driver of a pick-up vehicle has been caught in connection with the alleged hit-and-run killing of a traffic police head constable, who was on duty near the Kotwali circle in north Delhi Saturday night.
Victim Details
Head constable Anil (39), working with Delhi Traffic Police, was from Rajasthan. He is survived by his father, wife and two sons.
Incident Sequence
Police said the incident happened near the Ring Road, where the traffic policeman was checking vehicles. He noticed a pick-up tempo entering through a no-entry route and signalled the driver to stop. As the officer attempted to stop the vehicle, the driver allegedly accelerated, instead of stopping, and struck him. The pick-up vehicle then allegedly ran over him. Anil was rushed to a nearby hospital, where he succumbed to injuries.
Police Action
Police teams launched a chase and nabbed the driver. The vehicle was seized. A case was registered at Kashmere Gate police station.
Conflicting Reports
While reports claimed that the cop was first hit by a scooter and then run over by the goods carrier, a colleague of the officer denied this. Police said a probe is under way to ascertain the sequence of events.
Safety Concerns
Sources said the head constable was standing on the road, and not at the roadside. The traffic cop’s death is among several in recent days when traffic personnel were run over while on duty when they tried to stop vehicles on the road.
