In a significant move to curb organized crime and ensure public safety, the Delhi Police's Southern Range executed a large-scale anti-crime operation across multiple districts this week. The intensive drive, codenamed Operation Aaghat 3.0, was carried out under the direct supervision of senior officers from the South and South-East districts.
Massive Sweep Leads to Thousands Checked, Hundreds Arrested
The operation, which was intelligence-based, focused on disrupting criminal networks and deterring habitual offenders. Police teams conducted thorough checking and verification exercises at locations identified as vulnerable. Joint Commissioner of Police (Southern Range) S K Tyagi revealed that the drive led to the rounding up of more than 2,850 individuals during these checks.
Out of those scrutinized, a substantial number faced legal action. Police officials confirmed that over 600 people with criminal backgrounds were arrested in connection with various cases. To prevent potential breaches of peace, authorities also took 787 individuals into preventive custody. Furthermore, sustained surveillance measures led to legal proceedings against more than 155 listed 'bad characters' who were under watch.
Seizure of Illegal Arms, Liquor, and Cash
A key component of Operation Aaghat 3.0 was the crackdown on illegal weapons and contraband. Enforcement under the Arms Act was particularly fruitful, resulting in 66 arrests. The seized arsenal included 24 country-made pistols, 30 live cartridges, and 44 knives.
The police also dealt a heavy blow to illicit liquor networks operating in the capital. A total of 60 cases were registered under the Delhi Excise Act, leading to the arrest of 60 accused. The operation successfully confiscated approximately 22,500 quarters of illegal liquor.
In a parallel action against illegal gambling, authorities registered 29 cases under the Public Gambling Act. This resulted in 68 arrests and the seizure of around Rs 2.5 lakh in cash. The anti-narcotics drive saw 10 cases filed under the NDPS Act, with 10 arrests and the recovery of ganja.
Focus on Public Order and Property Crime
Beyond targeting specific criminal activities, the operation placed strong emphasis on maintaining public order. Police took action against over 400 people for the offense of consuming alcohol in public places.
Property crimes were also in the crosshairs. The police managed to recover 11 stolen vehicles and took necessary action against nearly 350 vehicles under the Delhi Police Act. In a significant breakthrough for victims of theft, authorities arrested five property offenders and eight alleged auto-lifters. Their efforts led to the recovery of more than 460 stolen mobile phones.
This comprehensive exercise by the Delhi Police underscores a continued and robust strategy to dismantle organized crime rings, apprehend repeat offenders, and create a deterrent effect to enhance security for Delhi's citizens.
