In a significant security development ahead of the 77th Republic Day celebrations, the Delhi Police has issued alert posters featuring the photograph of a wanted terrorist, Mohammed Rehan, for the very first time. According to officials speaking to news agency ANI, Rehan is identified as an operative of Al-Qaeda in the Indian Subcontinent (AQIS) and is a resident of northeast Delhi's Chauhan Bangar area. He is currently wanted by the Delhi Police and intelligence agencies in a case involving an IS Module.
Enhanced Security Measures for Republic Day
The inclusion of Rehan's image on the alert posters underscores the heightened security protocols implemented across the national capital. The Delhi Police has activated an extensive, technology-driven security apparatus throughout Kartavya Path and the entire New Delhi district. This move comes in response to multiple terror-related threat inputs received from intelligence agencies in the lead-up to the Republic Day celebrations on January 26.
Multi-Layered Security Cordon and Surveillance
Additional Commissioner of Police, New Delhi District, Devesh Kumar Mahala, detailed the comprehensive security arrangements. A multi-layered security cordon, comprising Delhi Police personnel and paramilitary forces, has been deployed in the Kartavya Path area. The entire zone is under constant surveillance through a vast network of CCTV cameras, which are integrated with an advanced facial recognition system (FRS).
Mahala further revealed that approximately 10,000 police personnel will be on duty during the national day events. Ground briefings and rehearsals have been conducted nine times to ensure preparedness. Anti-drone units have been positioned for aerial surveillance, and sniper teams are stationed on high-rise buildings to counter any potential threats.
Intensive Verification and Screening Protocols
To preempt security breaches, an intensive verification drive is underway across the district, targeting hotels, guest houses, tenants, and domestic helpers. During the Republic Day celebrations, pedestrians will undergo a minimum of three levels of security screening using Door Frame Metal Detectors (DFMDs). Vehicles will also be subjected to rigorous checks at multiple pickets established in the inner, middle, and outer cordons, including border and district pickets.
AI-Powered Surveillance and Public Appeals
SI Kuldeep Yadav from the control room highlighted the technological advancements in security monitoring. Nearly 1,000 high-resolution cameras have been installed to identify potential threats and challenges. These cameras are linked to an AI and FRS system that alerts authorities if it detects individuals with criminal backgrounds or suspicious vehicles. Sufficient staff are continuously monitoring the feed to ensure immediate response to any alerts.
The police have also appealed to all invited guests and ticket holders to carefully review the details on their invitation cards and strictly adhere to designated routes. This means that for the first time, military units will move in a formation mimicking actual battle scenarios, starting with reconnaissance and followed by logistics and personnel in battle gear. Officials told PTI that this new format aims to make the parade more engaging for spectators, reflecting a dynamic presentation of India's defense capabilities.
Furthermore, several important changes have been made to the security deployment pattern, prioritizing guest convenience and safety. The seating areas for the celebrations have been named after Indian rivers, adding a cultural touch to the event.
