New Delhi: A chance spotting of a masked man carrying a backpack in central Delhi's Beadonpura led police to unravel and foil a planned robbery targeting a courier executive transporting gold, diamond jewellery and other valuables. Five people, including a jeweller and an employee of the courier company, have been arrested.
Police said two beat patrol officers noticed the masked man during one of their routine checks. On seeing the police, he fled, prompting the cops to chase him through the locality and overpower him. A search of his backpack led to the recovery of two loaded country-made pistols. The accused was identified as Sumit (21) of Ghaziabad in Uttar Pradesh. A case under the Arms Act was registered at Karol Bagh police station.
Sumit allegedly revealed that he and his associates were planning to rob a courier executive carrying high-value consignments. Police said the gang had done reconnaissance of both the target and the surrounding area for nearly a week to ten days in preparation for the heist. He said that two accomplices were waiting nearby on a motorcycle.
"Through technical surveillance, analysis and follow-up, the team conducted raids at different locations, leading to the arrest of all conspirators," said DCP (central) Rohit Rajbir Singh. Investigations revealed that Sumit had conspired with Kallu (22) and Rohit (30), while the alleged mastermind was identified as Sandeep Delwan (43), a jeweller from Tilak Nagar. Police said Delwan had come in contact with Abhishek (25), an employee of the courier company, around two to three months ago. Delwan was allegedly under pressure to repay money owed to Rohit, while Abhishek is accused of providing insider information about the movement of valuable consignments and the intended target.
Police said Rohit, Sandeep and Kallu have previous criminal involvements. Based on the findings of the investigation, sections related to planning a dacoity and common intention under the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) were added to the case. More firearms were recovered during the searches.
