Delhi Police Takes Legal Action Against Banned SFJ Chief Over Republic Day Disruption Threats

In a significant development, the special cell of Delhi Police has officially registered a First Information Report (FIR) against Gurpatwant Singh Pannun, the chief of the proscribed terror organization Sikhs for Justice (SFJ). This legal action comes in response to Pannun's recent series of threats aimed at disrupting the upcoming Republic Day celebrations in the national capital.

Fresh Threats and Monetary Incentives for Khalistani Activities

According to police sources, Pannun has escalated his campaign by announcing a substantial cash reward of $1 lakh (approximately 83 lakh INR) for individuals who manage to raise Khalistani flags in front of European Union leaders during the Republic Day events on January 26. This is not the first instance where Pannun has offered financial incentives; he has a history of making similar promises in the past. Interestingly, some of his associates have reportedly complained to authorities that they never received the money that was pledged to them for carrying out such activities.

Social Media Video and Alleged Vandalism in Delhi Schools

Adding to the concerns, Pannun released a provocative video on various social media platforms on Thursday. In this video, he claimed responsibility for pro-Khalistan slogans that were allegedly spray-painted at several schools across Delhi. The police are currently investigating these claims to verify the authenticity and extent of the vandalism, while also assessing the potential impact on public order and security.

Legal Charges Invoked Against Pannun and His Associates

The Delhi Police has invoked multiple sections of the Indian Penal Code against Gurpatwant Singh Pannun and his associates. These include:

  • Section 152: Pertaining to acts endangering the sovereignty, unity, and integrity of India.
  • Section 196: Related to promoting enmity between different groups on grounds of religion, race, place of birth, residence, language, etc.
  • Section 197: Concerning assertions prejudicial to national integration.
  • Section 61: Addressing criminal conspiracy.

These charges underscore the serious nature of the threats and the legal framework being employed to counter them.

Background: SFJ Ban and Pannun's Designation as Terrorist

The Sikhs for Justice (SFJ) organization was officially banned by the Ministry of Home Affairs in 2019 under the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act. A year later, in 2020, Gurpatwant Singh Pannun was designated as an individual terrorist by the Indian government. This designation highlights the ongoing efforts to curb separatist activities and maintain national security, particularly in the context of sensitive occasions like Republic Day.

The registration of the FIR marks a proactive step by Delhi Police to preempt any potential disruptions and ensure the smooth conduct of the Republic Day celebrations, which are a symbol of India's democratic values and unity.
