Delhi Man Apprehended with 2.7kg Ganja at Assam-Tripura Border Checkpoint

In a significant drug bust, a 47-year-old man from Delhi was arrested with 2.7 kilograms of ganja valued at approximately Rs 40,000 at the Churaibari interstate border between Assam and Tripura. The arrest occurred in Sribhumi district, with police officials confirming the details on Sunday.

Routine Check Leads to Major Seizure

The accused, identified as Ravi Shankar Singh from Madhu Vihar in West Delhi, was apprehended during a routine naka checking operation at the Churaibari police checkpoint on Saturday night. According to police sources, the contraband was recovered from a long-distance passenger bus that was traveling from Tripura to Guwahati.

The vehicle was intercepted at the interstate check gate, where a team led by Officer-in-Charge Niranjan Das conducted a thorough search of the bus and its passengers. During the inspection, police officers grew suspicious of a passenger who was carrying a shoulder bag.

Contraband Discovered in Shoulder Bag

Upon searching the bag, officials recovered approximately 2.70 kilograms of ganja. The estimated black market value of the seized contraband is around Rs 40,000, as confirmed by sources familiar with the investigation. Preliminary inquiries revealed that the accused was allegedly attempting to smuggle the cannabis outside Assam by posing as a regular passenger on the bus.

Singh was arrested on the spot in the presence of independent witnesses and immediately taken into police custody. He was kept overnight at the Bazaricherra police station for further interrogation and questioning by authorities.

Legal Proceedings Initiated

On Sunday, police formally booked him under relevant sections of the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances Act. He was subsequently produced before the chief judicial magistrate’s court in Sribhumi, which remanded him to judicial custody. This legal action underscores the ongoing efforts by law enforcement to combat drug trafficking in the region.

The arrest highlights the vigilance of police at interstate borders, where routine checks can lead to significant breakthroughs in curbing illegal activities. Authorities continue to investigate the source and intended destination of the seized ganja to uncover any larger networks involved in the smuggling operation.
