The Delhi High Court heard emotional submissions on Monday from Rani Kapur, the mother of late industrialist Sunjay Kapur, who claimed she was deliberately excluded from her son's will. The court is examining a legal challenge to the will, which reportedly names Sunjay's wife, Priya Kapur, as the sole beneficiary of his vast estate, estimated to be worth around ₹30,000 crore.
Mother's Anguish in Court
Rani Kapur, represented by senior advocate Vaibhav Gaggar, told the court she was never informed about the existence of her son's will. She expressed deep hurt that the document makes no mention of her, despite Sunjay often acknowledging that everything he had came from her. "He (Sunjay) would have at least mentioned in the will that he does not want to give anything to his mother," her lawyer argued, as reported by PTI.
The plea stated it was "highly unlikely and improbable" that Sunjay Kapur would make Priya the sole beneficiary of his personal estate. It emphasized that the late industrialist shared a "deep bond and equal affection" with all his children, his mother, and other members of the Kapur family.
Allegations of Immediate Asset Grab
A central allegation presented before Justice Jyoti Singh was the conduct of Priya Kapur following her husband's sudden death. Rani Kapur's counsel claimed that instead of mourning, Priya "immediately began trying to take charge of his assets." It was further alleged that Priya concealed significant assets belonging to Sunjay Kapur in the list submitted to the court.
The purported hidden assets include:
- Paintings
- Bank balances
- Mutual fund investments
- Life insurance policies
- Rental income
- Watches
The submissions were made during the hearing of a suit filed by Bollywood actress Karisma Kapoor's children, who are also challenging the authenticity of their late father's will. The court is concurrently considering their plea for an interim injunction to prevent Priya Kapur from disposing of any of Sunjay's assets.
Background and Next Steps
Sunjay Kapur, former husband of Karisma Kapoor, passed away on June 12 after collapsing during a polo match in England. His death was reportedly due to a sudden cardiac arrest. The plea highlighted that marital discord between Sunjay and Priya had begun in May 2023, marked by constant fights.
After hearing the arguments, the Delhi High Court has listed the matter for further proceedings on December 3. The case puts a spotlight on a high-stakes family dispute over one of the country's significant industrial fortunes, raising serious questions about the execution and intent behind the contested will.
