Delhi Court Takes Cognisance of Money Laundering Charges Against Robert Vadra

A Delhi court on Wednesday formally took cognisance of charges against businessman Robert Vadra in a significant money laundering case linked to the Shikohpur land deal in Gurgaon. The court directed Vadra and eight other accused entities to appear before it on May 16, marking a crucial development in this long-running investigation.

ED's Prosecution Complaint Details Sophisticated Scheme

The Enforcement Directorate's prosecution complaint, filed in July 2025 and equivalent to a chargesheet, characterized the Shikohpur land transaction as a sophisticated scheme designed to generate and layer proceeds of crime. According to the ED's allegations, Vadra served as the main beneficiary of this elaborate financial arrangement.

Vadra has consistently denied any wrongdoing, describing the case as "political vendetta" targeting him and his family members, including his wife Congress MP Priyanka Gandhi Vadra, former Congress president Sonia Gandhi, and Leader of Opposition in Lok Sabha Rahul Gandhi.

Complete List of Accused Entities

Besides Robert Vadra, the court issued summons to the following entities:

  • Kewal Singh Virk
  • Skylight Hospitality LLP
  • Sky Light Realty Pvt Ltd
  • Real Earth Estates LLP
  • Blue Breeze Trading LLP
  • North India IT Parks LLP
  • Lambodar Art Enterprises India LLP
  • SGY Properties Pvt Ltd (previously Onkareshwar Properties Pvt Ltd)

The court notably did not summon another accused, Satyanand Yajee, stating there was insufficient material to proceed against him at this stage.

Background of the Shikohpur Land Transaction

The case originates from a February 2008 transaction in which Skylight Hospitality, where Vadra previously served as a director, purchased 3.5 acres of land in Shikohpur for Rs 7.5 crore. The company subsequently sold this same land to real estate giant DLF for Rs 58 crore in September 2012, representing a substantial appreciation in value over the four-year period.

Court's Limited Scope of Inquiry

Additional Sessions Judge Sushant Changotra, while examining the ED's prosecution complaint, emphasized the "very narrow" scope of inquiry at this preliminary stage. The judge clarified that the court was only required to broadly scrutinize the documents and satisfy itself that prima facie, there existed "sufficient grounds for proceeding further with the case."

Vadra's Alleged Role in PMLA Offences

The court noted that Vadra, as the "major shareholder and primary director/partner," had allegedly played an active role in offences under Sections 3 and 4 of the Prevention of Money Laundering Act (PMLA). These sections pertain to the offence of money laundering and the punishment for the same, respectively.

This development represents a significant legal step forward in a case that has attracted considerable political and public attention for years. The May 16 court appearance will be closely watched as the judicial process moves forward in this high-profile money laundering investigation.
